Frankie Muniz's Growth Spurt
Jan 16, 2001 - Virginia Rohan
It's a few days before Christmas, and Frankie Muniz, Hollywood star, is back home in Wood-Ridge, where the telephone is ringing non-stop.
E! Entertainment wants to come to the house to talk to the 15-year-old star of Fox's hit comedy "Malcolm in the Middle."
Fox News Channel missed out on a live remote interview, because Frankie and his mom, Denise, were at the dentist when they called to request it.
"I did have to finish my Christmas shopping," Denise Muniz says with a faint sigh. "I should have done it yesterday."
That morning, Dec. 21, their plans were abruptly albeit welcomely upended by the Golden Globe nominations. Not only was "Malcolm," the show, nominated as best television comedy, but Frankie got a nod in the best performance by an actor in a comedy series category.
"It was on like every news channel at 8:30, and it was the very first award. They go, Ted Danson from "Becker," Kelsey Grammer from "Frasier," Eric McCormack from "Will & Grace," and I was like, Mom, I don't think so. I wasn't expecting it anyway. And then they go, "Frank, er, Muniz," and I was, like, screaming."
His mom chimes in, "I didn't hear anything else after that. I was just hysterical. And then, the phone started ringing."
