Sandler Gets Serious About Comedy
Oct 7, 2002 - Chris Lamb
We're about to see a new side to Adam Sandler. Largely known as that loud-mouthed comic from SNL who has made a variety of movies that went from pretty good (The Wedding Singer) to really bad (Little Nicky), Sandler is eager to re-spark his movie career.
First up is "Punch Drunk Love," a new comedy that won a directing award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. "Punch Drunk Love" is based on a Time magazine article about David Phillips, a University of California civil engineer who stumbled upon a lucrative frequent-flyer promotion. Now known to the entire airline industry as the Pudding Guy, Phillips had accumulated 1.25 million "air miles" by purchasing 12,150 cups of Healthy Choice pudding for $3,000. Sandler will play the main character in the movie which opens this Friday, October 11.
Secondly, Sandler is moving into TV production. According to Zap2it.com, The WB Network has made an early production commitment to air Sandler's project about a 19-year-old who becomes the mayor of a small Northeastern town. The series is now expected to air on the WB in Fall 2003. Sandler is the show's producer.
