Long-running US TV show Gilmore Girls has been axed after seven seasons.

The family series, starring Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, won't be back for an eighth season later this year.

In a statement released yesterday, a spokesman for Warner Brothers - the network behind the show - says, "Announcing the final season of Gilmore Girls is truly a sad moment for everyone."

"This series... created a fantastic, storybook world featuring some of television's most memorable, lovable characters."
