"Because I Said So" gives Diane Keaton plenty of room to captivate us with her legendary comic skills, but more often than not, the movie puts less faith in its leading lady than it does in cake-in-the-face jokes (there are at least three).

Still, any movie with a decent static-cling gag knows at least something about romantic comedy. And, thankfully, the picture isn't a cringe-fest like the recent (and appalling) "Catch and Release" and "The Holiday."

Daphne (Keaton) is a single mom who's done a good job of raising her three grown daughters: responsible shrink Maggie (Lauren Graham), sexy middle sister Mae (Piper Perabo) and adorable but unmarried chef Milly (Mandy Moore). Daphne is also a born meddler who even has to interrupt a wedding picture to ask the photographer why they always have to say "cheese."

So you can imagine the sort of control-freak red alerts that go off in her head at the prospect of Milly ending up like herself --- alone for the rest of her life after marrying Mr. Wrong. To that end, Daphne decides she will find Milly the perfect man and places a personals ad (an increasingly formulaic catalyst). Only, of course, Milly can't know how Mom's Chosen Dreamboat turned up on her doorstep.
