Zach Braff of the U.S. TV series "Scrubs" is set to join the comedy series' creator in a movie prequel to the popular '80s film "Fletch."

The "Garden State" star will play the title role in "Fletch Won," which will be both written and directed by the mind behind "Scrubs," Bill Lawrence, The Hollywood Reporter said.

"This is an important franchise for our company, and we can't think of a better person than Bill to take the 'Fletch' story all the way back to the beginning," said Michael Cole, Weinstein Co. co-president of production. "His work on
"Scrubs" speaks for itself, and his ideas for adapting 'Fletch Won' are hilarious and incredibly smart."

Braff reportedly helped Lawrence get directing duties on the film by suggesting
him to Harvey Weinstein, whose company is producing the film.

"Fletch Won" will be adapted from Gregory Mcdonald's 1985 comic-mystery novel of
the same name, which like its book-to-film predecessors, "Fletch" and "Fletch
Lives," follows the tales of a wayward newspaper reporter who solves crimes, the
paper said.
