Mar 13, 2006 - Hanh Nguyen
Despite critical savaging, "Failure to Launch" took off in the top spot over the weekend, thanks in large part to People's Sexiest Man Alive, Matthew McConaughey. The comedy about a 35-year-old "adultescent" still living with his folks earned approximately $24.6 million in its debut. Sarah Jessica Parker stars as the love interest who lures him into residential independence.
The considerably less sexy remake of "The Shaggy Dog" starring Tim Allen and another "Sex and the City" alum, Kristin Davis, opened in second place this weekend with $16 million. Not to be outdone by cute animals, another remake, "The Hills Have Eyes," about hungry mutants, followed closely on the shaggy heels with $15.5 million.
The Bruce Willis film "16 Blocks" fell from last week's No. 2 to fourth place, with $7.3 million, while the Tyler Perry/"Madea's Family Reunion" juggernaut ended its box office reign, falling to fifth place with $5.8 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 is dog film "Eight Below," mermaid film "Aquamarine," hemophage film "Ultraviolet" and "The Pink Panther" tying for the eighth spot, and spoof comedy "Date Movie" bringing up the rear.
