We go "Greek" with Cappie

On the successful ABC Family television series "Greek", Scott Michael Foster plays 'Cappie,' the playboy president of the Kappa Tau fraternity. Born in the Chicago suburbs, the 24-year-old hottie enrolled in local theater programs after his family relocated to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. After a paying gig as a performer at Six Flags Magic Mountain, Scott decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue his dreams of an acting career and he got his big break when he was cast in "Greek". In addition to acting, the fan favorite also has musical interests as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for his band, Siren's Eye.

The 6'2", self-proclaimed "sensitive guy" spoke to us about why he enjoys playing Cappie so much, the addition of hot singer Jesse McCartney to the show and who he'd really like to do a scene with.

TeenTelevision: How did you first get interested in acting? Did you always know that you wanted to be a performer?

Scott: I knew exactly what I wanted to do when I was about 11 or 12. That's when I started taking choir and drama and things like that, as electives, and it became my main focus throughout high school and even the one semester of college that I went to. And then, eventually, it was the push that made me move out to L.A.

TeenTelevision: Did you have a moment where you realized that you could make a career out of it?

Scott: I didn't know I was actually going to be able to do it until it actually happened, but I always knew that I wanted to try, and I had all the support from family and friends to do it, so why not?

TeenTelevision: How did you originally get involved with "Greek"? Was it just through the regular auditioning process?

Scott: Yeah. I just got sent out on an audition for it and went through all the callbacks. It happened normally.

TeenTelevision: Did something specific appeal to you about the show or the character?

Scott: It was about college, and it seemed like a really fun script. And, what better way to be acting than as a fraternity president.

TeenTelevision: Was it always Cappie that you were interested in playing, or had you auditioned for any of the other characters?

Scott: I actually read for Calvin. I ended up getting Cappie, anyway, but I was called back for Calvin, a couple of times. That was interesting. I think Paul James does a better job than I would have.

TeenTelevision: In what ways are you like Cappie, and how are you different from him?

Scott: He takes a lot of electives, but he's a sensitive lover guy, when it comes to Casey Cartwright (Spencer Grammar). I think that's how we're similar. I'm the sensitive guy who likes to be in love. The difference is that he's the crazy party guy, and I wouldn't consider myself the guy who can get a rager going, just by snapping my fingers.

TeenTelevision: How has Cappie grown and changed, since you started on the show? How different is he from what you originally thought he would be?

Scott: In the beginning, it was just about him being Rusty Cartwright's (Jacob Zachar) big Brother, and Casey's ex-boyfriend. Now, he's had a relationship with Rebecca Logan (Dilshad Vadsaria), one of the ZBZ pledges, and you see him hanging out with different people on the show. It's not just Rusty and Casey. What's great about the writers on the show is that they've completely expanded everyone's characters, so that it's not dull or boring, in any regard. It's been awesome to see how they've all changed.

TeenTelevision: Have you given any specific input into the development of your character, or have all of those changes just been totally surprising to you?

Scott: What's cool for us is that, when we get the scripts, we read them and it feels how it does for everyone else, when they watch them. It's exciting for us to see what's going to happen next in the script. We don't have a lot of say in what goes into the scripts, so it's fun for us when we do get to read them 'cause we have no idea what's coming next. I know that, if we didn't like something, or something like that, and we wanted to change it, they would listen to us.

TeenTelevision: Do you do much improv at all, or do you prefer to stay with what you're given in the script?

Scott: Yeah, we all improv a little bit, at the end of a scene, but that doesn't mean that they'll keep it in, or that it's funny. We definitely do this and that, which keeps it fun. A lot of times, we'll do a scene and something will just come out and we'll add something.

TeenTelevision: When you were first developing your character, did you do any research into what it's like to be a part of the Greek system?

Scott: A little bit. I definitely did some research about the Greek system itself. I wasn't going to fraternity parties and taking notes, but I we all brushed up on our Greek. It helps. It definitely makes sense when there are words in the script that I would never have known, had I not been doing this show.

TeenTelevision: Have you learned anything about yourself, from playing this character and being on the show for the last couple of years?

Scott: Yeah, I learned that I really like having a job. This show is a really great first series for me, and for all of us. I want to keep going and see where it takes me.

TeenTelevision: Since this is your first major role, has the experience turned out anything like you expected it to be?

Scott: Yeah, for sure. We get to do more things. It's opened up a lot of doors for us, professionally. The show is still going strong. It's nice to see that people still like the show, ratings wise. People recognize us, when we're out and about, which was something to get used to. Our lives are definitely different.

TeenTelevision: What do you enjoy most about doing the show, and what's been the most challenging aspect of it?

Scott: I love working with the cast. We have such a great cast. To see, week by week, what's going to happen in the next episode, is still fun for us. The most daunting thing is the hours. Sometimes the hours can really suck. We have to get up at 5:30 am sometimes, and we'll shoot for 14 hours, and we'll do it again the next day. The hours can be a bit taxing, but the hours can also sometimes be fun. You're working all week on this big project and you dump all your energy into it. The only thing that sucks is that we do that all year.

TeenTelevision: You have such great chemistry with Spencer Grammar. What's it been like to work with her? Did you do anything to get to know each other, after you'd both been cast on the show, or did that just come naturally?

Scott: The first day of shooting was that pool scene where we actually kiss. We had this big scene about how Casey wants to get Cappie back in bed with her, and that was the first scene we ever shot together. We had done table reads before that, but it was our first day of shooting. A lot of what happened with her and I just happened naturally. We've hung out, outside set, but mainly it was just things that happened naturally, on set.

TeenTelevision: With such a big cast, is there anyone that you haven't really gotten the opportunity to work with much yet, that you're still hoping to get to work with?

Scott: Yeah. Amber Stevens, who plays Ashleigh on the show, and I don't do a lot together. You don't really see her and I interacting much, on the series, and we'd like to have more scenes together. We actually hang out sometimes, and it would be nice if we could work together.

TeenTelevision: Does it help keep things fresh for you that new actors can always be coming into the show as new students?

Scott: Yeah. We've got Jesse McCartney this year. He came on as one of the pledges in the House my character is president of. And, I think it will just keep going and more people will keep coming on. I don't know what will happen, but I'd like to think that it will follow all of our characters' lives and see what happens to them. But, I know they're going to bring more people in and show you all about what the Greek system does.

TeenTelevision: Could you ever have imagined that your character would become so popular, out of the whole ensemble of characters?

Scott: It is definitely an ensemble show. I don't think of myself as being above or below anybody else. It is an ensemble cast. And, I never would have imagined that the show would have done as well as it did. You never really know. But, the show has done really, really well, and it's amazing to see how people respond to it.

TeenTelevision: Is there anything you'd like to see Cappie go through or have happen to him, before the show is done?

Scott: I'd like to see him get back together with Casey, but I'm sure that will happen, at some point. That's basically it.

TeenTelevision: If you had your choice, are there types of roles or specific genres that you'd like to work in, that you haven't gotten the chance to do yet?

Scott: Yeah. I want to do all sorts of stuff. I'm a sensitive guy, so I really like love stories. But, I would also love to be in an action-adventure epic. Who knows what will happen. I guess I'll just play my cards.

TeenTelevision: Is anything going on with your music right now? Is that more of a hobby for you, or do you take that just as seriously as your acting?

Scott: It's a side project. We're still writing. We actually just got a new studio that we've been jamming out in. It's a lot easier for us to get music going when we have our own space. We'll see what happens. I think we're going to be playing a show on June 20th in L.A., and maybe we'll play more after that.
