Lauren Conrad Takes on "Family Guy "
"The Hills" star Lauren Conrad is branching out from reality television, as a guest voice on the "We Love You Conrad" episode of the Fox television series "Family Guy" (airing May 3rd) and as a Young Adult author with her first HarperCollins novel out in June.
On LC's "Family Guy" episode, Brian (voiced by Seth MacFarlane) discovers that his beloved Jillian (guest voiced by Drew Barrymore) is getting married to her new boyfriend, he decides to drown his sorrows away, but wakes up with more than just a hangover. After realizing that he has just picked up "The Hills" star (voiced by herself), he wants to run and hide until he discovers that he may have found his perfect match.
During a recent phone interview, the 23-year-old Laguna Beach, Calif. native told us that she's not interested in being an actress, but she would like to do some more voice-overs, in the future. And, she has no plans to attend Heidi & Spencer's weekend wedding.
TeenTelevision: Are you a fan of "Family Guy" and, if so, who is your favorite character?
Lauren: Yes, I am a fan of the show. I've watched it for years. My favorite character is Stewie (voiced by Seth MacFarlane).
TeenTelevision: How did your appearance on the show come about?
Lauren: Awhile ago, I only did a few lines, but I did a couple of lines on an episode where they were watching television and they did a clip of Laguna Beach. So, I met Seth MacFarlane the first time I did the show.
TeenTelevision: What's it like, seeing a cartoon version of yourself?
Lauren: It's fun! The most exciting part is to see what you look like animated. I think that I'm basically just a blonde character though, on this episode.
TeenTelevision: What do you think when you saw the animation?
Lauren: I liked it! I feel like, unless you have a really prominent feature on your face, you kind of look like a cartoon character.
TeenTelevision: Is there a Family Guy character that you think you're most like?
Lauren: I don't know if there's someone I really want to be like, on that show. Maybe Lois. I feel like she's the most normal.
TeenTelevision: Your character on "Family Guy" meets Brian (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), who discovers that you're nothing like what you're portrayed as on TV. Do you think the real you is different from what people see on TV?
Lauren: A little bit. I don't know if it's necessarily me, or just the reputation of an average reality star that they were going for. But, the episode basically makes fun of me for being dumb, and then he discovers that I'm actually a genius and that it's just a character I play because America likes dumb people. That's the idea of it. I think it's a more exaggerated version of who I am, but it was fun to play.
TeenTelevision: Did you do any improvisation or have any input into the lines you said in this episode?
Lauren: No, I actually stuck to the script. Their writing is probably a lot better than what I would come up with. But, I did have to actually hire an acting coach, just for the day, to get me through it because a lot of the lines, later on in the episode, are very complicated. I'm talking a lot about history and theorems and conductors. There were a lot of facts and a lot of big words, and I had to say it as if it was coming to me very easily, so I had to learn the lines ahead of time, rather than just reading them. I actually had to research some of them because the acting coach I worked with told me that, if I really understood what I was talking about, it would come through a little more true.
TeenTelevision: What was the most interesting fact you learned, while doing your research?
Lauren: Oh, they've since left my head. It was like when you memorize for a test and you cram the day before, and then you just push it out and fill it with US Weekly facts.
TeenTelevision: Besides "Family Guy" and "The Hills", what are your favorite shows on TV?
Lauren: Right now, I really like Lost. I'm watching "Brothers & Sisters". And, "30 Rock" is my favorite.
TeenTelevision: With you getting closer to leaving "The Hills", are you planning on taking more acting roles or voice-over work?
Lauren: Acting, no. I've done a couple cameos on shows and it was fun just to do for the day, but it's not really something I'm interested in. I did really enjoy doing this episode of "Family Guy" though, and I've been doing voice work for about five years, just because of the show I'm on, so that's something I would be interested in.
TeenTelevision: And, you've written a book that will be in book stores soon?
Lauren: Yeah, it's coming out in June. It's called "L.A. Candy". I signed a three-book deal, so it's the first of the three. It's a fictional series for teens, about a girl who moves to L.A. and signs up for a reality show, and it's the story that goes on behind cameras on a reality show. It's meant to be very "Gossip Girl", and it's very teen, fun and dramatic. It was very enjoyable to write.
TeenTelevision: It sounds like a subject matter you'd be very familiar with.
Lauren: Yes. Because I've experienced it, it was easier for me to write about, but I didn't necessarily base it on my life. It's more inspired by. I knew the situations she would be in, and I knew the things that go on, but I didn't exactly base it on specific people.
TeenTelevision: Now that you have been the first person from "The Hills" to become a cartoon, do you think any of your friends with follow?
Lauren: Maybe. I know Audrina Patridge is getting into acting, so she would probably be interested. I feel like any of the girls would be down. It's a fun thing to do.
TeenTelevision: With Audrina getting her own reality show, any chance you might make any guest appearances?
Lauren: Probably not. I feel like that's her thing. But, I don't know.
TeenTelevision: Everybody is talking about the wedding of Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt that's scheduled for this weekend. Do you think you'll go?
Lauren: Probably not.
TeenTelevision: Were you invited?
Lauren: Yes, I was invited.
