Zany Sitcom Still a Pitch-Perfect Paean to '70s
"That '70s Show" is a lot like Rodney Dangerfield. It never gets the respect it deserves.
When you think of TV's best sitcoms, such shows as "Friends," "Everybody Loves Raymond "and "Will & Grace" immediately pop to mind.
But, in case you hadn't noticed, "That '70s Show," a kooky comedy about a tightknit group of friends growing up in the "Me Decade," is quietly entering its sixth season. The show might finally get some notice, not because it's earned it, but because one of its stars, pretty boy Ashton Kutcher, is dating Demi Moore and has quickly become the tabloids' latest "it" guy.
The last time we saw the gang, they were graduating from high school. Eric (Topher Grace) and Donna (Laura Prepon) were heading off to college; Kelso (Kutcher) and Hyde (Danny Masterson) were the opposite ends of a love triangle involving Jackie (Mila Kunis); Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) and Laurie (newcomer Christina Moore taking over for Lisa Robin Kelly) got hitched, which gave Red (Kurtwood Smith) a heart attack.
As the new season opens, Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) is working two jobs to take care of Red; Jackie finally makes a decision; Eric has second thoughts about moving out; Fez's wife returns from her wild Cancun honeymoon ... alone; and Kelso has a hilarious allergic reaction to egg yolk.
And why is Kelso drinking eggs?
Well, he's studying to be a cop and, uh, drinking eggs worked for Rocky, didn't it?
Even in its sixth season, "That '70s Show" is showing no signs of slowing down. The cast's chemistry is as pitch-perfect as it was in the first year and is clicking on all comic cylinders much like "Friends" in its heyday. And as Eric's bickering folks, Red and Kitty remain TV's funniest parents.
Surprisingly, "That '70s Show" is routinely snubbed at the Emmys. But the show's loyal fans know one thing Emmy voters don't, "That '70s Show" is a wonderfully zany wink and nod to a decade that thankfully refuses to die.
