'Gilmore Girls' Star Talks Emmys

By all rights Lauren Graham should be among the presenters at the Sept. 16 Emmy Awards. Though her acclaimed WB "The Gilmore Girls" failed to win even a single Emmy nomination, it was named 'Best New Show of the Year' by the Television Critics Association, and Lauren's work as a single mother on the series earned her the Family Television Award as 'Best Actress' and 'Best Actress of the Year' laurels by Viewers for Quality Television.

Emmy Awards' producer Don Mischer says that Lauren is under consideration to be an Emmy show presenter, but notes, "We're not even halfway booked yet. There's only a limited of number of slots, and we simply don't have space for many people who deserve to be on. Among those we've thus far set are Sela Ward, Kelsey Grammar, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, Lorraine Bracco, David Copperfield, Martin Sheen, Calista Flockhart and James Gandolfini. It's a tough process. Besides everything else, we're trying to balance networks."

Lauren is being philosophical about the situation. She says that if it turns out that she's not among the Emmy presenters, "I won't mind. So many wonderful things have already happened with the show, how can I be upset about something that doesn't happen?"

She adds, "It takes time for things to catch on as far as the Emmys are concerned. But for us to even to be in a place where people are complaining that the show didn't receive any nominations in its first season, that's distinction in itself."

Lauren expects to celebrate the Emmys, if not at the event itself, then at one of the many parties 'round town. But she's not saying with whom. "It puts a lot of pressure on a relationship -- especially when a show gets popular -- if you name the person you're dating. I won't even say if I'm dating someone special or not."
